Coffee in Rural Cambodia

Avatar Monica Williamson Posted on: 2016-07-15 10:33 AM

So to preface this somewhat anti-climactic report, I have to say I've been largely unimpressed by the coffee here in Cambodia. Not that it hasn't been reasonably good, only that it's nothing special. However, I don't know if that's the case because of the fact that most restaurants and cafes that we've been to have been very Westernized to appeal to incoming tourists. Finding trustworthy local food and coffee has been a bit more difficult than anticipated.

That being said, there's two things of note to mention:

Firstly is the coffee we had with breakfast at the homestay. It was a 3-in-1 packet of instant coffee, condensed milk powder and sugar that actually made a tasty (if very very sweet) cup of coffee. I laughed thinking they'd be perfect for camping and I am going to find some at the markets/shops to bring home.

Secondly is the restaurant we went to today, where I had a cafe mocha that was pretty nice. A strong cocoa flavour that overpowered the coffee a little, but it did taste like they used real cocoa. Plus just the right amount of foam and no need for sweetener, it made for a nice afternoon treat. The restaurant seemed to be within the touristy strip near the National Museum but was a little tucked away and not as blatantly whitewashed as some surrounding places. I had tasty vegetable curry with steamed rice to round out the late lunch. Here's some photos for you to sift through as you will.
