I had the opportunity to wander the campus and area surrounding McGill University recently. It’s beautiful campus is nestled on Mont Royale in one of the most engaging cities in the world Montreal. While walking to McGill along any of the many routes the coffee lover will have lots of choices at whatever time of day you are around. One of the things that I love about coffee shops near colleges and university’s is the hi quality WiFi, the quantity of big comfy chairs and the long hours.
For those who prefer the chains you won’t be disappointed. They are all well represented Tim Hortons, Second Cup and Starbucks all have locations that could be considered on campus. The Tim Horton’s at the corner of University and Sherbrooke is one of the busiest locations I’ve ever seen. It’s open 24 hours a day, has Wifi and the staff are extremely efficient. But good luck getting a table. A couple doors down there is
Java U. This coffee shop has a great open seating area, a great menu and the big comfy seats that I was looking for. The coffee was fresh and smooth with a very subtle caffeine hit. With any place that had good foot traffic I’d be surprised to be remembered by the barista but guess what they seemed to know all of their regulars. Cudos.
As I continued my walk along Sherbrooke I saw a tiny busy place at the corner of Peel and Sherbrooke attached to the Hotel Ville Marie
Café Castel. I usually avoid hotel coffee but I’m always attracted to lines when it comes to food and Cafés. The line was right, it is a tiny little café with great natural lighting and a Mediterranean feel. The staff were especially courteous. It was a great mid morning treat to sit and watch people while drinking your latte from a real cup.
After my visit to the University I had a few hours to kill before my next meeting. I still had a bit of a buzz on so I decided to try some local Decaf. It ducked down into the
Café Bistro Van Houtte to get out of the rain and grab a decaf. I was a bit disappointed that it wasn’t ready and that I had to wait for it. It was a very good cup of coffee that I couldn’t tell was decaf. The location felt claustrophobic down under the stairs so it wouldn’t be my first stop while walking down the street.
My last stop was the
McCafé on University Ave. I treated myself to a McCafé Mocha. It was pretty darn tasty. It had a smooth rich taste and there was none of the after taste that is common with a lot of mass produced flavoured coffees. As always the location was immaculate and all of the laptops indicated that it was an popular student hang out.
