If you were worried about giving up coffee during pregnancy, then relax. A new study has revealed that women drinking and eating moderate amounts of caffeine during pregnancy are not harming their child’s intelligence.
The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital research, one of the first studies to focus on how in utero caffeine exposure affects a child’s future intelligence (IQ) and behavior later in childhood, found caffeine did not lead to a reduced IQ or increased behavioral problems. Researchers did not find evidence of an adverse association of maternal pregnancy caffeine consumption with child cognition or behavior at four or seven years of age.
Researchers consider their results to be reassuring for pregnant women who consume moderate amounts of caffeine or the equivalent to one or two cups of coffee per day. The study appears in American Journal of Epidemiology.
Consuming Moderate Caffeine Causes No Risk in Development of Baby
According to a new study by researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, moderate caffeine exposure during pregnancy does not lead to reduced IQ or increased behavioral problems later in childhood. It seems good for pregnant woman who are fond of drinking coffee every day as the study shows that moderate coffee intake causes no harm to intellectual and intelligence behavior of baby.
Researchers examined blood samples taken between 1959 and 1975 from more than 2,000 expectant mothers. They studied caffeine levels at two points during pregnancy and compared those levels to the child’s IQ and behavior at ages 4 and 7. The results displayed no consistent patterns between a mother’s caffeine intake and the development and behavior of their children at those ages.
The findings assure parents that caffeine intake can cause no harm to the development of their children. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, taking caffeine less than 200 milligrams per day or one tall cup at Starbucks cause no harm to baby. The officials added that taking moderate caffeine consumption also reduces the risk of miscarriage or preterm birth.
